New to the Area? How to Settle In

Moving to a new area can be exciting, but it can also be quite daunting. If you are moving you have to get used to a new routine and new neighbors. Depending on how far away you came from, you may also have to worry about a new job and making new friends or being away from family. If you’re new to the area or you recently moved, check out this guide on how to settle into your new home and feel more at ease.

Unpack and Organize

When moving to a new area, make sure your home space is comfortable. Unpack your boxes and decorate your home accordingly so you can make your new space one that is comfortable and enjoyable to be in. While you may experience some discomfort being around new people and places when moving to a new area, you can make your home a safe, comfortable place to be which can help you settle in and feel more at home.

Meet Your Neighbors

While meeting your neighbors may seem like an obvious go-to when moving somewhere new, not everyone does it. Meeting your neighbors can be a great way to meet new friends. Even if they are not people you see yourself spending a lot of time with, it is always good to have a friendly relationship with your neighbors. Since they live next to you, you can rest assured that they will keep an eye on the neighborhood and its ongoing activities. This can help put your mind at ease when moving to a new place because you know a little bit about the people who may be keeping an eye on your house when you are away all day at work or on a short business trip. They can shoot you a text if they think you left your garage door open on accident or let you know if anything concerning has been going on in the neighborhood. Meeting your neighbors can lead to friendships and a sense of safety.

Try Something New

Try something you’ve never tried before! Maybe the area you have moved to is famous for its hikes or outdoor trails. Maybe you are near some tourist attractions. Try checking them out! By partaking in activities outside of the home, you may find some new interests and meet new friends. Doing an activity can be a great way to get to know people as you can talk about shared interests without feeling like you are trying too hard since you are also performing an action. Whatever the most popular activity is in your new area may be a good activity to try, even if you have never had any interest in it before, because it can lead you to meet a wide variety of people. Even if you decide to never do the activity again, you may make a friend or two while you’re at it!

Say Yes

Another great way to settle into an area is to say yes to things. If new coworkers or neighbors invite you to an event, try your best to attend it. These can be great networking opportunities and great ways to meet new people. You may try out an activity you have never done before and find out you enjoy it, you may make new friends, or both! Say yes to invites when you are new to an area as it will help you get to know new people and options for things to do in the area.

Explore

From outdoor adventures to local mom and pop shops, your new area is likely to have all kinds of places worth exploring. Find a new friend or invite an old friend to explore the area with you. Or, you can take a solo adventure! Explore new places and establish your new favorite places to eat and hang out in your new city. Finding your new favorites and go-to places can really help you get to know your community and settle into the area.
